We've all heard stories, good and bad, involving punters who have had a windfall from a small $5 accumulator, or who have lost a small fortune because of a foolish impulse bet. Let's go back to Saturday 29th September 2001. Manchester United are the visitors to White Hart Lane for a highly anticipated clash with Tottenham Hotspur. With Roy Keane serving a suspension and Ryan Giggs not making the side after a midweek Champions League clash, the home fans had every reason to be optimistic.

What followed was one of the most amazing days in Premier League History. Spurs were 2-0 up after only 25 minutes with Dean Richards and Les Ferdinand hitting the target. United were clearly off the boil and, when Ziege scored to make it 3-0 on the stroke of half time, it looked like game, set and match for the home side. Enter our hero. A Spurs fan, clearly overcome with bravado and emotion, suddenly decided that he was a professional football tipster, and wanted to make some easy money from the game. Spurs had to win, right? 3-0 up at home and cruising against a sloppy looking United side - it was too good to be true.

Now, with that score line, obviously odds for backing a home win were going to be extremely short. Not a problem for our man at White Hart Lane - the more money he could get together to place on a Spurs win, the bigger profit he'd collect. He went on to place his entire mortgage on a Tottenham win. That's worth repeating - his entire mortgage. One can only imagine the nervous tension that engulfed him when Andy Cole pulled one back after 45 seconds of the second half. Less than 15 minutes later Laurent Blanc headed home a corner and, when Van Nistelrooy scored the equalising goal with 18 minutes left to play, the writing was on the wall. Veron and Beckham made it 5-3 by the end of what was an incredible game. It's hard not to feel an element of sympathy for the losing punter. However, the first piece of football betting advice you should be taught is to never bet more than you can afford to lose, no matter how sure you are about the outcome. Hallescher  v  Karlsruhe GERMANY 3 LIGA  8 December 2012

Our next pick comes from the third tier of German football, where I'm tipping Karlsruhe (who provided us with a win last weekend) to continue their excellent form today. They have now moved up to third place thanks to a superb winning streak of seven consecutive league games (the last three wins were by a margin of 3 or more goals). Today they travel to play an inconsistent Hallescher side that haven't won at home since August. Their home record currently stands at 2.3.4 and they sit just 2 points clear of the relegation zone before kick off. Karlsruhe have won four and drawn two of their last six league games on the road and the free scoring side look great value to do the business today. Odds for a Karlsruhe victory are too good to overlook and seem to have been overpriced by the bookmakers. Away win.

Verdict:     Away win at $2.10   Outcome:  WIN  Result 0-2
