What’s happening in the English Premier League lately? It’s virtually impossible to pick the outcome of a game with any degree of confidence. A few weeks ago most people had handed the title to an admittedly invincible looking Chelsea side. Three games and one point later and the club are in ‘crisis’. Frustrated punters are beginning to avoid betting on the minefield that is England’s top tier of football. Professional football tipsters are wary of including any selections from the top flight in their weekly soccer tips. It was always easier than this, wasn’t it?

The three teams that win promotion from the Championship every season are usually widely expected to either go straight back down or end up in a tough battle to avoid relegation. As we approach December let’s have a look at some interesting and unusual statistics and positions from the current league table. After fifteen rounds of games, the three promoted teams – Newcastle, Blackpool and West Brom – occupy ninth, eleventh and twelfth positions on the table. Without delving into the archives of Premier League tables stretching back over the last 10 years, I certainly can’t recall a similar scenario occurring at this early stage of the season.

Even more surprising are the incredible results sandwiched between inconsistent displays achieved by these sides so far this year. Just when a team seems to be showing their true form, one massive upset result suddenly blows everything wide open, making the art of predicting soccer matches extremely difficult.

Let’s look at the Geordies for starters. Five days after losing 3-0 to Manchester United, Newcastle thumped Aston Villa 6-0 at home. They beat Everton at Goodison a week after going down by two goals at home to Blackpool. Then three days after a famous 1-0 win over Arsenal at the Emirates, they lost at home to Blackburn. Try to derive a ‘form guide’ from those erratic results.

Next up Roberto Di Matteo’s West Brom. When they lost 6-0 to Chelsea on the opening day of the season, few gave the Baggies any hope of Premier League survival. They went on to beat Man City at home, outplay Arsenal in a 3-2 win away from home and earn a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford. Recently they were winless in five league games and the wheels looked like they had finally fallen off. Yet they followed up this poor run of form with a 4-1 mauling of Everton at Goodison over the weekend.

The charismatic Ian Holloway ensures that Blackpool are almost always in the media in some shape or form, and their results have probably been bigger upsets than those of the other promoted sides, especially as they’ve achieved upset wins thanks to their valiant attacking style. A 4-0 win at Wigan was followed by a 6-0 drubbing by the Gunners. Famous away wins at Newcastle and Liverpool came either side of an unlucky 3-2 home defeat to the mega rich Manchester City, yet they lost subsequent games to Birmingham and Blackburn.

What does all this mean? Well for one thing it’s one of the most entertaining seasons in years. It literally does seem to be the case that on a good day, any team can beat any other team, without exception. As the financial gap between teams widens, it makes the justification of this unpredictability all the more challenging. Sunderland beating Chelsea 3-0 at home is one such example. What it also means is that betting on the Premier League is becoming a nightmare for soccer tipsters and punters. For the record, I haven’t incorporated a selection from the English Premier League in my free soccer tips since October 23rd – a successful Chelsea HT/FT double over Wolves. Judging by current trends and results I might avoid this unpredictable league for another while yet. There seems to be a lot more joy in the lower English leagues, as well as Europe and South America. Hallescher  v  Karlsruhe GERMANY 3 LIGA  8 December 2012

Our next pick comes from the third tier of German football, where I'm tipping Karlsruhe (who provided us with a win last weekend) to continue their excellent form today. They have now moved up to third place thanks to a superb winning streak of seven consecutive league games (the last three wins were by a margin of 3 or more goals). Today they travel to play an inconsistent Hallescher side that haven't won at home since August. Their home record currently stands at 2.3.4 and they sit just 2 points clear of the relegation zone before kick off. Karlsruhe have won four and drawn two of their last six league games on the road and the free scoring side look great value to do the business today. Odds for a Karlsruhe victory are too good to overlook and seem to have been overpriced by the bookmakers. Away win.

Verdict:     Away win at $2.10   Outcome:  WIN  Result 0-2
